Five ways to
Redefine your Rehabilitation
Published 14 September 2025
Recovering from injury or managing physical challenges doesn't have to feel overwhelming. Whether you're looking to reduce pain, improve mobility, or simply feel more like yourself again, rehabilitation is a journey and you're in control. It isn’t just about recovery, it’s about redefining what’s possible for you - so let’s dive in.
Here are five practical ways to take charge of your rehab and set yourself up for success.
We’ve broken them down into five simple and memorable ideas: What, Why, Where, When, and Who.
-
What’s been bothering you lately? Is there a specific pain, weakness, or change in your body that you’ve noticed? Or maybe you’ve been inspired by something or someone?
Take a moment to reflect. What is it that you want to improve in your body, your function, or your daily habits. Getting clear on what needs to be addressed is the first step, then you can begin to create meaningful change with purpose.
-
Now that you know what you want to change, ask yourself why it’s important. What will life look like when you’ve made progress? Maybe it’s something big, like walking around your local park again. Or maybe it’s something smaller but equally powerful, like being able to get from the lounge to the kitchen and make a cup of tea independently.
Set both short-term and long-term goals. Quick wins help build momentum, while long-term goals keep you focused on the bigger picture. Ask yourself:
What would make a real difference to my daily life?
What would bring me more comfort, happiness, or freedom?
How might reaching these goals also positively impact the people around me?
When your goals are rooted in what truly matters to you, motivation naturally follows.
-
Your environment plays a powerful role in supporting your motivation and progress. Designate a small space in your home or community that encourages you to move. It could be a quiet corner in your home, perhaps with a mat, resistance bands, and a few personal touches that inspire you. Or you might feel more motivated at a local community group or gym, where you can move alongside others. When your space is ready and welcoming, you’re already one step closer to taking action.
If the outdoors inspires you, embrace it. Whether it’s getting out onto your balcony, garden or to your local park, find what works. Recent UK research shows that rehabilitation programmes which include exercising outdoors and spending time in nature significantly improve physical activity, endurance, and outdoor mobility in older adults.
-
One phrase I often share with my clients is: “Meet yourself on the mat.”
Its important to be realistic about your time and energy. Look at your week and carve out regular moments, no matter how small. Whether it's 30 minutes each morning or just 1 session each week, showing up matters more than how long you’re there.
Once you’ve set your plan, write it down. Put it somewhere visible and track your progress, seeing those small wins add up is incredibly motivating.
And remember: If you miss a session, don’t beat yourself up. Life happens. Just pick it back up when you can. Progress isn’t about being perfect, it’s about staying in the game.
-
You don’t have to do this alone. Think about what kind of support would help you most. Is there a friend, partner, or family member who can encourage you and keep you accountable?
If you’re feeling stuck or unsure how to move forward, finding the right professional support will be hugely beneficial. A physiotherapist will assess where you’re at, create a plan tailored to your goals, and guide your progress every step of the way.
